This day stands as a tribute to their resilience, integrity, and enduring commitment to informing humanity.

The purpose of this day is to recognize and reaffirm the essential principles of press freedom, the rights of journalists, and the universal right to express truth without fear or repression. It offers a moment to acknowledge those members of the press who continue to uphold these ideals despite intimidation, censorship, and adversity.

The origins of this observance trace back to the landmark Windhoek Declaration of 1991, adopted in the African city of Windhoek, which underscored the indispensable need for a free, independent, and pluralistic press. In recognition of its significance, the United Nations formally proclaimed May 3 as World Press Freedom Day in 1993.Journalism and freedom of expression are inextricably linked. A free press serves as the conscience of society, illuminating truths that might otherwise remain obscured.
